MODERN ART & DESIGN AUCTION
June 13, 2004
The June 13, 2004 Modern Art & Design Auction was held at Hanger One at the Santa Monica Airport. This proved to be a phenomenal day for Los Angeles Modern Auctions, as a rare dining table designed by George Nakashima achieved a world record price.
A George Nakashima dining table achieved a world record price of $129,250 (hammer of $110,000). This was the highest price achieved at auction for a work designed and executed by George Nakashima to date. A previous high price of $130,500 (Phillips, NY, June 2003, Lot #174) was started by George Nakashima in 1989 but finished and signed by his daughter, Mira Nakashima in 1992 after George's death.
The rest of the sale was tremendously successful, with 80% sold with the average lot selling for just over $2,700. Highlights included a Le Corbusier watercolor and ink on paper entitled Trois nus debout (Lot 119 est. $7,000 - 9,000, realized $11,750), a Vladimir Kagain"Tri-symmetric" chaise (Lot 58 est. $4,500 - 5,000, realized $9,400), and six ceramic Roy Lichtenstein plates, Bull Series I through IV (Lot 47 est. $3,000 - 4,000, realized $5,287).
